FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE: Quotes) can offer discounts to car owners in Germany in new car purchase if they exchange certain older models affected by pollutant emissions scandal that rocked the largest manufacturer of European cars, told German news agency DPA on Sunday.
The Volkswagen is facing its biggest crisis in business over its 78-year history, after admitting last month have installed software on diesel vehicles to deceive US regulators about the actual level of toxic emissions.
The company said it would make a recall of about 8.5 million diesel vehicles in Europe with the installed software. The special offer was available only in Germany, where some 2.4 million vehicles to go through recall were sold.
Incentives for Volkswagen car owners buy new vehicles can help ensure that sales remain stable after the scandal and take the pressure off the utilities to deploy patches quickly.
The offer discounts to new car buyers should focus on owners diesel vehicles of 1.6 liters, sources said on Volkswagen and utilities, according to DPA.
The Volkswagen said in response that it is common for Volkswagen and its dealers consider special offers for their customers.
