Network defined by software: how will the future of this market? – IT Forum 365

IDC’s latest forecast indicates that network defined by software (SDN, its acronym in English) – which includes physical network infrastructure, virtualization software / control applications and professional services – have compound annual growth rate ( CAGR, its acronym in English) of 53.9% in the period 2014 to 2020, moving about US $ 12.5 billion in 2020 .

software-defined networks continue to gain traction in the market as a innovative architecture model , capable of allowing automated provisioning, network virtualization and network programming for data centers in the cloud.

Although initially SDN has found way into hyperscale data centers and cloud service providers on a large scale, it is now gaining attention from enterprise data centers in various verticals. While the physical network will continue to be mainly responsible for the market segment SDN in 2020, the fastest growth will be found in the two categories of software – the layer of virtualization / control and SDN applications – that together will move about $ 5.9 billion.

IDC expects the virtualization software market will reach $ 2.4 billion in 2020, with compound annual rate of nearly 64% during the forecast period. SDN applications will jump at a compound annual rate of 66% by 2020, when they will be responsible for a revenue of more than US $ 3.5 billion.

Rohit Mehra, Vice IDC’s network infrastructure chairman, believes that the increased demand for SDN happen much because of the third platform in the cloud. Brad Casemore, research director for IDC center Networking date, adds that while hardware will continue to occupy a prominent place in the network infrastructure, SDN is indicative migration in the long run from hardware to software in the networking industry.

According Casemore for suppliers, this new scenario will cause them to have a more collaborative approach to IT and a more focused understanding for business.
