MediaTek announced the CrossMount – a new technology that simplifies the hardware and software resources sharing between different consumer devices. Designed to be a new pattern of convergence between devices, the CrossMount structure ensures that any compatible device can use and perfectly share hardware resources or user-authorized software. The CrossMount is an open and easy to implement technology to the broad ecosystem of customers and partners MediaTek, opening up possibilities for multiple devices work effectively as a single or share hardware resources and applications.
The CrossMount defines its service mounting pattern based on the UPnP protocol, and can be applied mainly in Android and Linux as well as on other platforms. The CrossMount works through discovery, matching, authorization and simple use of hardware resources of devices and smartphone software, tablets and TVs. The communication between the devices is accomplished through home gateways (wireless LAN) or peer to peer (Wi-Fi Direct). The discovery and sharing are granted through an implementation of easy software that allows all devices enabled for Wi-Fi to share resources without the need for cloud servers.
“Consumers have adopted a wide variety of devices connected to the Internet at home, in schools and workplaces and the CrossMount sets the new standard for easy interaction between devices and resource sharing. We are particularly interested in providing this innovation to our broad ecosystem customers and partners around the world, releasing your imagination to create new immersive experiences that further enrich people’s lives, “said Joe Chen, Senior Vice Ppresidente MediaTek.
With the CrossMount enabled devices, for example, viewers can simply match your TV sound with their smartphone headphones or use the microphone on your smartphone as a voice controller to search content on your smart TV. This is a breakthrough in user experience, since the standard CrossMount means that multiple devices can function as a whole, rather than simply share content.
“CrossMount is much more than mirror the phone to TV – as has already been developed in the industry,” added Joe Chen. “The CrossMount goes beyond with the hardware and software sharing capabilities between intelligent devices, thus creating many useful and more complex uses, such as attaching the camera smartphone to your TV and enable the TV to a videoconferencing session.”
To further promote the adoption of CrossMount as an industry standard, MediaTek is creating CrossMount Alliance to meet its large ecosystem of partners and customers, and explore new possibilities to stimulate technology. The CrossMount will be open to developers to further expand the ability to create innovative and new applications, potentially changing the way we use and share devices and content. Chang-hong, Hisense, Lenovo and TCL are the first customers to adopt MediaTek CrossMount.
The CrossMount will be available in the third quarter for smartphone, tablet and TV based on Android and should reach the final consumer until the end of the year.
