carmaker announced voluntary recall of 7,810 SUVs on Friday. In July, the company requested a review of 1.4 million cars.
Fiat Chrysler announced on Friday (4), the voluntary recall of 7,810 SUVs due to a software flaw that could make them vulnerable to vehicles remote control.
Half of the vehicles in the event SUVs Jeep Renegade 2015 equipped with 6.5-inch touchscreen screens are still at dealerships, the automaker said in a statement.
The company minimized the risk for drivers, saying that until then had not received any complaints regarding the breach.
“The manipulation targeted by this recall software requires unique expertise, as well as physical access to the vehicle and a long period needed to write code,” the automaker.
No is the first time that Fiat Chrysler announced a recall due to possible loopholes in their software. In July, 1.4 million company cars had to be revised after two security researchers demonstrated gain access and control the vehicle remotely.
During the annual conference Black Hat security, based in Las Vegas, Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek showed how the brakes of a Jeep Cherokee could be manipulated by exploiting flaws in UConnect, vehicle unit dedicated to navigation, entertainment and other controls.
The latest vulnerability involves different issues, assured the Fiat.
But apparently also involves the same UConnect system. The company said customers can check whether your vehicle is affected by informing your ID humerus in UConnect Web site.
Those who have bought the model in question the automaker will receive a thumb drive containing software update, similar the way the company handled the largest recall.
This method has been criticized since hackers can easily fool people to install malicious software on their cars. However, not many choices left to Fiat, who had to distribute updates widely and quickly as possible
