The tragedy of Germanwings and flight guidance software – PortFolk

It seems that the voice recorder on board the fatal flight 9525 Germanwings recorded the alarm sound in the cabin warning the co-pilot Andreas Lubitz to “pull up” and “ground” ahead. But that was not enough to prevent the aircraft crashing into the French Alps.

These reports, which Lubitz apparently ignored, rekindle aviation in theory specialists to develop and deploy complex software prevention of shocks that can take control of the airplane away from the driver and drive the aircraft to a safe altitude.

As reported by the US TV network CNN, this technology would work in a similar manner to the accident prevention technology already used in automobiles. If a pilot is incapacitated or ignores beeps, software airplane flight guidance could take and chart a course for a safe attitude. In cars, these prevention systems sometimes trigger the brakes or slow down to maintain safe distances from other vehicles.

The idea is not new. For over 10 years, after September 11, Airbus, maker of rugged aircraft was developing technology with Honeywell giant to prevent accidents – in part to prevent jets are directed to achieve large buildings or mountains. But the project was abandoned.

As you would expect, is not a solution unanimously accepted. There are many in the aviation sector with the view that computers can do better. However, always occurs reaction in any situation where it relieves the pilot’s control of his plane, by both aviators and even from the airlines.

Despite the possibility of be developed technology to prevent accidents such as the 9565 flight Germanwings, this solution will be insufficient to override to that now adopted by the airline, adding another pilot to the cabin.
