In addition to a lot of imagination and creativity, the main films of Studio Ghibli have in common use of Toonz application in its creation. Soon, this animation tool will now be open-source and free for those who want to download. The new version will be called OpenToonz.

With this measure, the Digital Video aims to make their application in the standard for the creation 2D animation. Some of the features developed specifically for the studio founded by Hayao Miyazaki will also be available to future users. Given the nature of open-source, community of creatives and developers must also come to contribute resources of their own.

The introduction of the free version will be accompanied by a premium version. The latter will be directed to major studios interested in investing in tools tailored to their creative goals. But the free model will be more than enough to produce animation in two dimensions without this meaning any investment by the creative. In other words, a tool that until now was only accessible to large studios will get access to more amateur animators.

The from March 26 you can download the application here.
