Gartner emphasizes that the future of the data center is in the software – Computerworld

Gartner says that data centers defined by software will be increasingly relevant to the development of digital business. The advice, however, warns:. The concept does not apply to all IT organizations in the current context

The SDDC comprises a processing center where all the infrastructure is virtualized and delivered as a ‘service’. This allows increased levels of automation and flexibility to support business agility by increasing adoption of cloud resources, and modern technology approaches.

In view of consulting, currently, most companies are not ready to start the model of the adoption process and therefore must proceed with caution. But that should change soon.

According to projections, by 2020, data centers, software-defined date will be considered a fundamental requirement for 75% of 2000 global companies involved in implementing DevOps approach and hybrid cloud model.

“infrastructure leaders and operations need to understand the business landscape, the best use cases and the risk of a SDDC. Due to its current immaturity, the concept is more suitable for visionary companies with advanced knowledge in engineering and architecture, “advises Dave Russell, vice president at Gartner.

The expert notes that technology leaders should not just buy one of these prefabricated virtual infrastructure from a vendor.

“First, they need to understand why they need it for your business and then implement, orchestrate and integrate many parts, probably from different vendors,” says the analyst.

for him, beyond all implementation work, new skills are required and a cultural change in the iT company to ensure that this approach provides results for the business.

Gartner recommends that companies have a realistic view of the threats and benefits and make plans to mitigate the main risks of a failure in the SDDC project. The firm presented three points to help executives direct their approaches.

1. skills assessment . A simple change of an old infrastructure to a set of products defined by software is questionable as the generation of benefits.

Gartner says that before an activity is automated and self-service is implemented, the process, associated with the iT service needs to be completely rethought and optimized.

This may require new skills and a different culture than is currently available in certain iT companies.

” a process broken is still a broken process, no matter how well it is automated. you have to build the right skills in business, allowing infrastructure architects to experience the public cloud in small projects, as well as giving the opportunity to them to leave and learn what their colleagues in other companies and visionaries are doing, “says Russell.

2. Knowing the right time. the time to switch to a data center defined by software can be years away for some companies, but for many it will come sooner than allow their preparations.

“the first step is to understand the basic concepts of SDDC. Thus, managers can review the available solutions, starting with a component, process or domain defined by software which can benefit. The final step is to plan a roadmap for full implementation if and when the solutions are appropriate, “says Gartner analyst.

Moreover, even the areas defined by more established software and networking and storage are still taking shape and experiencing early stages of adoption levels.

the implementation phase is recommended, since it is established that the solutions on the market provide functionality, interoperability and viable production deployment history proven.

3. Beware of vendor lock-in. Open Source Standards or cloud management platform can help IT organizations reduce the technological constraint, but this can not be eliminated completely.

According to the consultancy, also there are no universal standards for infrastructure programming interface applications, then adopt and codify a specific API results in a degree of restriction. It is vital to understand the compensation at work and migration costs or output when choosing suppliers and technologies.

“We must recognize that the adoption of a SDDC means negotiating a hardware restriction by restriction software. Choose the most appropriate type of conscious and with all the facts in hand way, “he concludes.
