Toonz is a company that produces software that probably never heard. If we talk in TV series such as Futurama, Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away may already be familiar.

The company’s main product is an animation software that helps in scanning drawings and ‘cleaning’ the same as well as allows editing, animation and compositing images.

This software came to cost $ 10,000 per license, but from today is available as open source. This opening follows the company’s acquisition by Dwango.

According to Atsushi Okui, President Executive to Image in Ghibli Studios, he said the company used the Toonz because “was able to combine drawings made hand with the produced computer in perfect harmony. ” The first time this software tool was used was in 1995 to produce the designs of Princess Mononoke.

On 26 March will be launched Toonz Studio Ghibli Version includes features developed in collaboration with the animation studio, so that independent animation designers can use the software without facing excessively high costs for access to essential tools.

instead of financing through the license acquisition costs the company plans to sell the facility services, training and support, thus encouraging the use of this powerful tool
