Ford opens its Smartdevicelink software for other brands … – National Insurance Portal

Ford has taken a new initiative in the automotive sector by providing open platform as its SmartDeviceLink technology, advanced software that allows drivers to access smartphone applications by the vehicle voice command. Successfully used in branded products, the system moves to become the standard in the industry, since Toyota has already announced the adoption of Ford’s technology in its vehicles. Other manufacturers such as PSA Peugeot Citroën, Honda, Subaru and Mazda, and providers such as QNX Software Systems and UIEvolution also study your application.

The SmartDeviceLink has many features that are illustrated in the video at this link. Its adoption by other automakers and suppliers will help standardize and increase the number of applications available for vehicles. With a common software, developers can focus on improving a single platform for customers of various brands.

“The benefit of a common interface for smartphone apps is to enable standardization, providing better experiences for customers and giving companies the freedom to differentiate their brands,” said Don Butler, CEO of vehicles and Connected Services Ford.

The SmartDeviceLink software, including AppLink, is part of Ford Smart Mobility – Ford’s plan to advance connectivity, mobility, autonomous vehicles, customer experience and data analysis. It allows the driver to access smartphone apps through the screen, buttons and vehicle voice commands. Popular music apps such as Spotify and Aupeo !, as well as others like Glympse, UOL News, Guide UOL, Let’s Park, No Stop and 89 FM radio stations and Alpha FM are part of the growing list of options available for users of Ford AppLink in Brazil.

 Benefit to consumers

The availability of the software as open source is a benefit to customers throughout the industry. The new applications arrive faster to vehicles equipped with SmartDeviceLink, because developers have access to a larger volume users. And automakers and suppliers can provide more connection options to consumers. Standardization will help increase the quality and software security, collaborating with multiple partners in its improvement, and also to its spread to new markets such as China, Taiwan, New Zealand and Thailand.

The AppLink is available today in more than 5 million Ford cars in the world, integrated into the Ford SYNC, and is expected to reach 28 million by 2020. Later this year, Ford will introduce a new version of AppLink allowing access to smartphone navigation apps on the vehicle screen, an important resource for customers around the world.

 Community of connected cars

By making the SmartDeviceLink an open source software for the industry, Ford gives the possibility of each brand provide entertainment systems and different connectivity, integrated with the smartphone apps. The Livio, a wholly owned subsidiary by Ford, is responsible for managing the open source project, working with companies to create appropriate interfaces to each vehicle.

“Developing a safer car service connectivity with the smartphone – and that matches the characteristics of each vehicle – is exactly the value and benefit that an automaker can offer customers,” says Shigeki Terashi, Executive Vice President Toyota Motor Corporation. “We hope that other companies share our view and participate in the SmartDeviceLink partnership in the industry.”
