Approved software that will give interactivity to digital TV – iMasters

The Brazilian System of the Forum of Digital Terrestrial TV (SBTVD) approved the adoption of a third version of Ginga software tool that will enable the interactivity of TVs that receive digital signals. In comparison with the other versions (Ginga A and B), Ginga C will, and greater data storage capacity – especially applications and multimedia files – a hardware structure that will put you in connection conditions to the internet.

“Through an optional add, Ginga C will provide greater storage capacity for setup box . Thus you have more room to keep resident applications and to download more content. It is the first step towards a real integration of broadcasting with the internet, “said the president of the forum, Roberto Franco.

The SBTVD Forum is composed of representatives of the broadcasting industry, equipment manufacturers and academics.

According to Franco, although supported by technicians during previous meetings, the new equipment concerned so-called “reception industry” – companies in the electronics sector who will assume manufacturing of devices for the reception. “This concern [corporate] is legitimate and common to any system in the implementation phase, and was founded on new challenges and risks of incompatibility with the profiles A and B of Ginga,” said Franco.

A working group was set up to identify and resolve as soon as possible any problems presented by software. “I am sure that the risk of having problems is very low,” he added.

The Brazilian digital TV is part of Brazil 4D Project, which is coordinated by Brazil Communications Company (EBC). Through television, citizen access to public information and services will be possible. The idea is to take the tool to about 14 million families benefiting from the Bolsa Família program.

Part of the costs will be covered by approximately R $ 3.6 billion in funds obtained as compensation paid by mobile phone companies that won the tender of the 700 MHz band (MHz).
