City | Lack software to detect full time in the Douro |
Portuguese Environment Agency, floods, Porto, Douro River, Vila Nova de Gaia | The computers of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) are not able to receive data from floods in real time because they do not have appropriate software for this purpose. |
The complaint was made on Wednesday by Claudia Brandão, one of the main leaders of the APA, who pointed out this fact as a possible cause of existing communication failures in the recent flooding of the River Douro, occurred about two weeks and reached, among others, the coastal areas of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
“The lack of software update may have prevented the correct and timely data visualization,” acknowledged Claudia Brandão. “The operating system does not work in the best conditions precisely because the software not be adapatado the current reality.”
Claudia Brandao went further. He added that this situation is not new and that lasts from the beginning of the crisis and they began to apply austerity measures in the previous term of Government and the presence of the troika in Portugal.
“Since then, the program does not update target. We have permission from the government to do so, “noted the head of the APA.
The floods that climbed the banks of the Douro were one of the main topics of debate in a public session organized participation by the Portuguese Environment Agency , held at Casa do Infante, Porto, and was attended by about a hundred experts.
One speaker was Sampaio Pimentel, Councillor with responsibility for Civil Protection City Hall Porto, which came to regret the conditions in which they are the flood detection sensors along the Douro course.
“More than half of the stations are not operational, some because they were vandalized “said Sampaio Pimentel, who had already made similar complaints during the two weeks of flooding. “This finding was referenced at the time by Mariana Vieira da Silva, Assistant Secretary of State of the Prime Minister, who accompanied us operations,” he said.
The councilman pointed to the future paths that can go through ” better coordination between all parties involved “and a” more timely prevention “in case of new flood situations. “That is always unpredictable,” said
