Volkswagen obliged to draw 500,000 cars due to software … – Daily News – Lisbon

The US authorities ordered on Friday that Volkswagen withdrew the roads almost 500,000 vehicles due to software that have been designed purposely to get around environmental laws of the United States, says The New York Times.

The software used by Volkswagen in four-cylinder vehicles between 2009 and 2015, was able to detect when the car was being tested to determine their greenhouse gas emissions, and control them at those times. The rest of the time, when the car was being used on the road, the emission control system would be shut down, and car emissions would be much higher than indicated by the company or measures in the tests.

The mechanism installed in cars concealed high emissions of nitrous oxide, a gas that contributes to ozone formation in the lower atmosphere. This type of pollution is associated with lung diseases and other health problems, and legislation implemented by the Obama federal government has sought to reduce it.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA, in the English acronym) of United States accused Volkswagen of violating environmental laws of the United States with that software. Use it on cars “to circumvent the clean air standards is illegal and a threat to public health,” said one of the administrators of the EPA, Cynthia Giles, the New York Times .

Volkswagen should withdraw the roads around 482,000 diesel vehicles, according to the New York Times , sold between 2009 and 2014.
