Today (4), Google first talked about Walt, a software that helps people discover how long a device takes to respond to a touch screen or voice command. For several years, Google has used the Walt to do performance testing on devices Android and Chromebooks, and now the program is available as open source , with a license Apache .

To use Walt, first you need a microcontroller, an accelerometer and a laser that, together, should not cost more than $ 100 Google software engineer Mark Koudritsky wrote in blog of the company on the tool:

“An important innovation in the Walt (a descendant of the QuickStep) is that it synchronizes the clock hardware external to the Android or Chromebook device in less than one millisecond. This allows measuring the input latencies and output separately instead of measuring a round-trip latency and back.”

This is not the first time Google releases a software as its open-source. It is important to note that this type of program sharing ends up helping the technology community, which can improve the products with these new tools. In this case, the differential is that Walt is not very common to release software for hardware system optimization, but on the other hand, Apple could use it to test the sensitivity of the screens of the iPhone, for example.

To download Walt, just go to GitHub.
