Itapeva students create software that tells you the quality and type of … – Globo.com

Students and teachers of the Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp) in Itapeva (SP) have created a software that identifies the quality and type of the analyzed wood. The program has already raised the attention of companies in the sector. “At least four logging companies and industries have shown interest in the project,” the teacher Carlos de Oliveira Afonso.

The study was conducted over the course of Industrial Wood Engineering of the institution, in partnership with Unesp of Guaratingueta and University of São Paulo (USP) in São Carlos.

To create the new technology, systems used for facial recognition on social networks served as a model. Professor André Rossi explains how the software works. “First is done image processing to extract features useful for later identification. Then, through data discovered, the program evaluates what are the most important attributes to perform the classification of material. This is after creating a set of mathematical rules that enable research on wood quality, “describes.

The program’s database consists of a catalog that identifies imperfections in the woods. According to the student Luis Felipe Amaral, more than 600 types of variations have been dated. “By cataloging the computer standardizes the information for each timber class,” he says.

The main advantage of the software is the price, which is around £ 10,000. Machines with the same function can cost $ 300,000. In the future the idea is to patent the program. “We are building prototypes to be applied in the industrial environment”, says Afonso.
