Software uses selfies to create avatar that mimics user in real time – Look Digital

A software developed by researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology allows users to create digital 3D avatars using selfies from different angles and videos with facial expressions. Images are responsible for providing the system information such as pores and skin and hair. The videos capture details like smiles, yawns and wrinkles and expressions appearing as the face moves.

According to those responsible for the project, the goal is to allow people to create avatars that can be used games, virtual reality meetings and conversations in applications such as Skype. “The movies and most blockbuster games have huge budgets. With this system it takes only 5-10 minutes,” explains Alexandru Ichim, one of the researchers .

Once the avatar is ready, you can play with it in real time using smartphones and notebooks. For now, the processing must happen on a computer connected to the device used and the image quality depends on the device’s camera used to capture photos and videos.

The software should be presented next week in a conference in Los Angeles.
