Swiss software lets you create digital avatar with some selfies – iMasters

Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) developed a software for users who create their own digital avatars in a few minutes with their smartphones. When the avatar is ready, users can play with their “digital copy” in real time, in devices such as cell phones and laptops.

For this, the user must first take selfies from different angles, mapping small facial details such as pores and skin your face shape. Then record short videos showing various facial expressions such as smile, yawn and frowning, for example. At that point, the image quality depends on the device’s camera used.

So far, the process needs a computer connected to the smartphone, but soon the EPFL team want to launch an application version for the software.

“Movies and most blockbuster games have absolutely huge budgets,” said Alexandru Ichim , one of those involved in the project. “With this system, we only need five or ten minutes.” The avatars could be used, for example, games, Skype versions 3D and even in virtual reality meeting.

Details about the technique will be clarified soon, when the EPFL team present the project this week, during Siggraph2015, an international conference of computer graphics that takes place in Los Angeles, this year of 9 to August 13
